A Tamil wedding does not wait for a photographer. The thaali is tied once, the mother cries once, and the uncle who has not been home in ten years arrives exactly when nobody is looking. Our job is to be in the right place before any of that happens.
That is why we run a crew rather than a photographer. On a typical wedding day you will have two candid photographers moving independently, one traditional photographer holding the formal record, a cinematographer, and a drone pilot for the arrivals and the mandapam wides. Nobody is doing two jobs at once.
We shoot the rituals as they happen — nichayathartham, mehendi, haldi, kasi yathirai, kanyadaanam, thaali kettu, maalai maatral, ammi midithal, nalangu and the reception — and we know which of them are quiet and which ones need a second shooter on the crowd.
