When to book, what to wear, and the studio and outdoor concepts that flatter every bump — from our Madurai maternity sessions.
A maternity session has a narrow, unforgiving window. Too early and the bump does not read in photographs; too late and you are uncomfortable standing for an hour. Get the timing right and everything else becomes easy.
The right week
Weeks 28 to 34 is the sweet spot. The bump is unmistakably round, energy levels are usually still good, and swelling has not typically set in. If you are carrying twins, move it earlier — weeks 26 to 30.
Studio concepts
1. Dark and sculpted
Black backdrop, single softbox from the side. The bump is shaped entirely by light. The most requested look we shoot.
2. Flowing chiffon
A long trailing gown with fabric thrown behind. Movement makes the frame feel unposed.
3. Silhouette against white
Backlit, exposed for the rim. Clean, graphic, prints beautifully in black and white.
4. Partner hands
His hands framing the bump from behind. Simple and always in the final album.
5. Sibling kiss
Older child leaning in. The unpredictability is the point.
6. Traditional Tamil
Kanjivaram, temple jewellery, jasmine. Especially popular alongside a valaikappu.
Outdoor concepts around Madurai
- Golden-hour fields near Anaiyur — backlit, warm, and endlessly forgiving.
- Vaigai riverside at dusk for open sky and reflection.
- Rooftop city light just after sunset with a long lens.
- At home — the nursery, the window, your own bed. Deeply personal and increasingly requested.
What to wear
- Fitted over flowing where the bump is concerned — jersey and knit define it; heavy brocade hides it.
- Solid colours. Prints fight the bump for attention.
- Jewel tones photograph richer than pastels under studio light.
- Bring one traditional look and one gown; the contrast makes a better album.
- Partner and children in a shared, muted palette — never matching exactly.
Comfort planning
Schedule two hours but expect to shoot for ninety minutes. Eat before you arrive, bring water, and tell us the moment you want to sit. We build breaks into every maternity session by default, and every pose we use has a seated variation.
See our maternity packages, or bundle with a newborn session — most families end up wanting both.
